CARING FOR YOUR OIL-FINISHED COUNTERTOP AND CUTTING BOARD:
Oil-finished countertops and cutting boards by Hudson Block Co. utilize a food safe virgin mineral oil with Vitamin E stabilizer to protect the wood from drying and cracking. The finish, which meets FDA requirements for direct and indirect food contact, is produced in the absence of allergenic materials such as nuts and gluten. Proper maintenance will preserve the beauty and integrity of the solid butcher block countertop or cutting board for the duration of use.
Oil-finished butcher block countertops and cutting boards by Hudson Block Co. receive multiple coats of food grade mineral oil and conditioner prior to shipment. An additional coat of food grade mineral oil over the entire surface area is recommended prior to use as drying may occur during the transition from production to delivery. Re-application of either mineral oil and/or suggested conditioner is recommended to preserve the moisture content within the butcher block.
For best results and longevity, Hudson Block Co. recommends oil application daily for 5-7 consecutive days after receiving your product. Continue application once per week for 3-5 weeks followed by 1 application of oil or conditioner per month to prevent the butcher block from drying. Apply oil or conditioner whenever the butcher block shows signs of dryness.
Do not submerse in water or allow water to collect for periods of time.
Use a hot water and soap solution to clean your butcher block product. Do not use bleach or rough materials to clean your oiled butcher block. Air dry in a well ventilated area.
To remove scratches, cuts, and stains, Hudson Block Co. recommends using a 220 grit sanding block in the direction of the grain. Once the wood is sanded smooth, rub a generous coat of food grade mineral oil with a clean rag in the direction of the grain. Let stand overnight before wiping off excess. For extra protection, apply 1 coat of butcher block conditioner.
Lemon juice may be used to neutralize odor from garlic, onions, etc.
Butcher block cutting boards are best stored on edge to keep dry with continual air flow.

CARE FOR YOUR POLYURETHANE-FINISHED TOP:
Polyurethane-finished countertops, islands, and benches by Hudson Block Co. are sealed on all surfaces during manufacturing. The top surface receives multiple coats of Hudson Block Co. polyurethane for superior durability and water resistance.
Proper maintenance will preserve the beauty and integrity of the solid butcher block surface for the duration of use.
Polyurethane-finished butcher block countertops and cutting boards by Hudson Block Co. receive multiple coats of polyurethane prior to shipment. This surface is nearly maintenance free with the exception of minor scratches and stains.
To clean your butcher block top, use a hot water and soap solution followed by a rag or towel to dry the surface. Formula 409 may also be used. Do not use ammonia, bleach or rough materials to clean your polyurethane-finished top.
Although water resistant, we do not claim to have waterproof surfaces. For longer lasting tops, keep the surface dry to promote longevity. Do not directly expose butcher block tops to hot cookware.
To remove minor scratches that have not penetrated the wood and surface stains, Hudson Block Co. recommends using a 220 grit sanding block in the direction of the grain. Once the surface is sanded smooth and uniform, clean all remaining debris, wax, grease, debris, etc. with a clean cloth dampened with mineral spirits. A thin coat of Hudson Block Co. recommended polyurethane can be applied with a high quality brush or natural foam in the direction of the grain. Allow 4-6 hours to dry. Lightly sand area with a 220 grit block to ensure an even surface and adhesion. Apply a second coat by repeating the steps. A third coat may be required. Allow approximately 24 hours to fully dry prior to use (dry time may vary depending on temperature, humidity and circulation). Always spot test on an inconspicuous area prior to application of polyurethane.
